The partial eclipse will occur on the evening of Thursday 31 December and will begin at 19:52 when the Moon will start penetrating into the earth's shadow with the left side of the moon becoming dark. The maximum of the eclipse was reached at 20:23 when the moon penetrated more deeply into the earth's shadow, however, most of the moon was still illuminated. At 20:55, the Moon will get out of the earth's shadow but will remain in its penumbra, which will result in a little residual darkening. The moon become fully illuminated again at 22:31. The various stages of the partial eclipse will also be visible in Africa, Europe and Asia, but virtually invisible from North and South Americas as well as Australia. The next total lunar eclipse will not be visible again from Algeria before 28 September 2015.

As usual, we got an exceptional media coverage for this astronomical event despite its modest nature. Most of the major newspapers mentionned our communiqué. We mention in particular the two main newspapers writting in French, El Watan and Le Quotidien, in addition to La Tribune, El Moudjahid, An-Nasr... One of them, Horizon, devoted close to one page about the event with large headlines in its last page. The Algeria Press Service (APS), the official press agency, had a a news running on it. In addition, all the public radios run interviews with us, most of them broadcasted live or in their news bulletins: Channel 1 (In Arabic), Channel 2 (In Amazigh), Channel 3 (In French), UFC (The University Continuous Education Channel), and the ever faithful Cirta FM radio from Constantine. We mention that even some Moroccan media like Medi1 and MarocWeb published portions of our communiqué.
We feel proud that Sirius was able to bring to the Algerian public timely, relevant, and accurate information on this astronomical event. We estimate that millions of people read the news from those various media outlets and were able to follow the unfolding of the eclipse, thanks also to a very favorable weather all over Algeria.

Pour Clore en Beauté l’Année Mondiale de l’Astronomie 2009

L’Association Sirius d’Astronomie tient à informer le public de l’occurrence d’une éclipse lunaire partielle dans la soirée du Jeudi 31 Décembre 2009, et qui sera visible de toute l’Algérie. Cet événement astronomique se caractérisera de plus par le fait que toutes ses phases seront visibles d'Algérie après le coucher du Soleil.
Ce magnifique spectacle sera visible d’Afrique, d’Europe et d’Asie, et pratiquement invisible des deux Amériques et d’Australie. Cette éclipse, quoique partielle et donc qui demande une observation attentionnée, constituera une belle occasion pour clore en beauté cette année 2009 proclamée Année Mondiale de l’Astronomie tant par l’UNESCO que l’ONU. Rappelons que cette Année célèbre le quatrième centenaire des observations historiques du Ciel par Galilée en 1609 à l’aide d’une lunette de sa confection, ainsi que du 40ième anniversaire des premiers pas sur la Lune. Elle aura vu un record historique d’activités scientifiques grand public liées à l’Astronomie tant en Algérie que de par le Monde. Notre pays s’est notamment distingué par l’obtention d’un premier prix au niveau international à travers l’Association Sirius lors de la tenue des « 100 heures d’Astronomie » au début d’Avril 2009.

L’Eclipse du 31 Décembre et ses Phases
Rappelons en quelques mots en quoi consiste une éclipse lunaire. La pleine Lune en entrant dans l’ombre de la Terre s’éclipse progressivement. Pour une éclipse totale, la disparition du disque est complète et peut durer jusqu'à une heure et demie environ. Pour l’éclipse du 31 Décembre qui ne sera que partielle, seule une petite partie du disque lunaire pénètrera dans le cône d'ombre de la Terre et on observera qu’un fort assombrissement du bord lunaire. Voici quelques données astronomiques sur les différentes phases de cette éclipse, le Jeudi soir (temps local):
- 19h52 : Le début de la phase partielle: Entrée de la Lune dans l’ombre de la Terre qui avec un assombrissement très net du bord droit inférieur. La Lune se trouvera alors à une altitude de quelque 28° à Constantine (26° à Alger).
- 20h23 : Le maximum de l'éclipse. A cet instant, la Lune aura pénétrée le plus profondément dans l'ombre de la Terre quoique la partie qui restera illuminée sera toujours largement prépondérante.
- 20h55: La fin de la phase partielle: La Lune sort de l’ombre de la Terre mais se trouve encore dans sa pénombre, ce qui résultera en un petit assombrissement résiduel qui ne s’estompera complètement qu’à 22h31.

Détails pour Amateurs Avertis
Pour les amateurs avertis, nous mentionnons les faits suivants : La Lune se trouvera dans la Constellation des Gémeaux et lors du maximum de la partialité il n’y aura que 8% du disque assombri. La brillante étoile Sirius se trouvera à 22° au Sud de la Lune éclipsée, tandis que la belle constellation d’Orion se trouvera à sa droite, mais dû à la brillance du ciel nocturne à cause de la pleine Lune trop partiellement éclipsée, ces objets célestes ne seront pas des plus facile à observer.

La Prochaine Eclipse: pas avant le 28 Septembre 2015
Notons que la précédente éclipse lunaire visible d’Algérie était le 21 Février 2008 et que la prochaine éclipse lunaire totale qui sera complètera visible d’Algérie ne se déroulera pas avant le 28 Septembre 2015, quoique les phases avancées de celle du 15 Juin 2011 seront visibles de notre pays.
Malgré que le phénomène pourra être suivit de n’importe quelle location offrant une vue dégagée dans la direction de l' Est, l’utilisation d’instruments optiques tels que jumelles et lunettes astronomiques permettra de suivre avec plus de détail les phases de l’éclipse. Même une location avec pollution lumineuse comme au centre des villes ne devrait pas gêner outre mesure l’observation de l’éclipse à l’œil nu.
En espérant qu’une bonne météo soit au rendez vous, bonne veillée d’observation et bonne fin de l’Année Mondiale de l’Astronomie 2009 !

The Sirius Honorary Distinctions for the Year 2009
Hiba receiving from the Vice president of the Khroub's APW the diploma on behalf of Fayza who couldn't attend. Fayza was cited for her role as translator of many Association documents back and forth from Arabic - English - French, and lately as a leading contributor to the Apodar project.	The 6 Laureates - Zakaria Chebli - Chakib Benkenida - Fayza Bennouar - Wafa Bendali- Hacine - Mourad Hamdouche - Asma Mimouni     Asma was rewarded (No picture available) for initiating and supervising the Sirius forum.	Wafa (Right) receiving her distinction from Ouarda, an executive bureau member, for her role in leading the scientific theater group throughout the years and conceiving the various plays.

The distinction award ceremony in presence of the Khroub's Mayor and the Vice president of the Khroub's APW, was followed by a solid brunch in preparation for the lengthy sighting evening.
The partial lunar eclipse sighting campaign started well before the beginning of the partial phase, and part of the time was devoted to initiating the new members to the "secrets" of sky watching. Jupiter's disk and its satellites were followed almost till it set behind the buildings of a close by city block, in addition to Orion, the Andromeda galaxy and other well known celestial objects.

The Day the International Year of Astronomy 2009 opened up

In early morning at the so called Km10 camp of the SMA between Constantine and Ain Smara, met the Sirius members for an end of the year retreat. Evaluating a year of activities as well as deepening one's basics in Astronomy and skill building, all this in a brotherly and joyful atmosphere.

Solar observations with the PST	Sighting Venus on day time around 1:00 pm: Up to 10 of us could sight it with naked eyes while the remaining of the members saw it with binoculars.
