The Official End of Ramadhan
(Observing the Shawwal Crescent)

The crescent was not seen anywhere in Algeria and in the Muslim World
..
(Completion to 30 days for Ramadhan)

It was announced on Saturday evening by the National Crescent Committee for Algeria that the first day of Eid will be on Monday, May 02, 2022 based on the non-observation of the crescent that evening. The hilal was also not seen anywhere in the Muslim World that evening too.

Yet, here is an important point made by Mohamed Odeh from ICOP concerning the spurious claims of crescent observation on the 29th of Ramadhan, that is before even the conjunction :

Announcing the Ramadhan in Algeria
(...in the most parcimonious way)

First day of fasting: Saturday April 2, 2022

Like expected, the start of Ramadhan as announced on national TV the evening of the 1st of April was not based on the direct crescent observation but rather on extraneous considerations. Lost in the middle of a lengthy communiqué full of fioriture and "baggy" expressions, it is mentioned the "one horizon" principle (إتحاد المطالع) as the basis for having chosen not to follow the (negative) result of the direct observation that it claims to abide to. At no time does it mention, although implicitly clear, that the crescent was not seen anywhere in Algeria by the forty or so crescent committees (Probably too embarrassing) or on which crescent viewing in the Muslim World they relied upon.

CCD observation of the crescent ?
Now the Arab world took notice of the claimed observation of the crescent in Saudi Arabia and accordingly announced the start of the month of fasting on Saturday; yet this sighting was impossible both by naked eyes and by the telescope, and this according to all the know astronomical criteria. Thus the "One Horizon" fatwa connecting two impossible sighting locations is not very coherent.
Some have reported that the Saudi viewing was based on a CCD observation of the crescent... but that would come as a surprise since this way has never been approved nor made use of before. Furthermore, Algeria doesn't approve it on its own turf nor even allow for the use of any optical aid like binoculars or a telescope, how could it allow it from another country

Summary for this Year's Ramadhan Start...
with a Comment

The month of fasting for this year 2022 should start on Sunday 3 April if we follow a strict naked eyes viewing, but on Saturday 2 April computationally wise or on the basis of an erroneous viewing of the crescent as it happens almost every year.
Indeed, astronomically speaking, the crescent will not be formed that evening at viewing time for most of the Muslim World and so it will be unobservable by naked eyes and marginally so with optical aids, yet invisible by naked eyes in the whole American continent.
Yet, it is correctly stated in the ICOP communiqué under the pen of its Director Mohamed Odeh, that it is expected that the fasting will start on Saturday 02 April, but not, as it is less than candidly stated, because countries in mostly the Arab World will follow the rule:

"... since there is the possibility of seeing the crescent with a telescope from parts of the Islamic world on Friday, and due to the occurrence of the conjunction before sunset and the setting of the moon after sunset in all regions of the Islamic world, it was customary in such circumstances that most countries of the Islamic world to announce the start of the month of Ramadan on the next day, that is on Saturday, April 02..."

... but rather because of a recurrent erroneous sighting in one of those countries, and truly speaking in Saudi Arabia since it is taken to be the yardstick and reference for the first sighting in the Middle East.
The rule explicited above in the ICOP communiqué is only applied in Turkiye (Turkey), the Balkans and is supported by few heavyweight Islamic institutions in Europe and the US like ISNA, ECFR...

Difficult visibility over most of the the Muslim World, except the US and the Northern part of South America. I nay case, since those countries who started on the 3rd of April will have completed 30 days on that evening, they will have to celebrate Eid anyway on Tuesday regardless of whether or not they will have observed the crescent.

La Nouvelle Lune

Suhail Najmi

A Lovely Poem on the Lofty Ramadhan Crescent

crescent Algeria
By Bob Eklund, California, U.S.A
(With personal permission from the author)

Faintly gleams a new-born crescent to the seekers of the light ;
Who will see that early portent, on this pristine August night
?
Month by month, through countless ages, man has sought the Moon’s rebirth
;
Month by month her cycle guides us, on an ever-changing Earth
.

On each continent and island, watchers of the crescent blend ,
On a planet without borders, hope and vision without end .
Sing the wide-winged Moon!” cried Homer, watching from his distant sky ;
Soothingly thy smile,” wrote Goethe, “spreadest round me, far and nigh .”

Watchers of the sky, all poets, may you wax and never wane ,
Young in heart as this new crescent, every month a steady gain
;
All you Watchers Without Borders, may your crescent shine tonight
;
May it touch with truth and beauty your long battle for the light
.

 NOTE:
- The line from Homer is from his “Hymn to Selene,” as translated by Percy Bysshe Shelley.
- The line from Goethe is from his poem “To the Moon,” translated by John S. Dwight .

A Du'a for this Blessed Month

Hafsa Bourkab

I wish you 1 month of Good Fortune
and 4 weeks filled with barakat and wealth,
30 days of forgiveness,
720 hours of guidance and health..
43200 minutes of purification and mounting joy,
and 2592000 seconds of Nour and many much more to enjoy!

May Allah shower us with His mercy
In a month that is not only holy but blessed
And grant us the utmost peace and prosperity
And abounding happiness in times we're so stressed...

I can't help but pray that:

Happiness be at your door
And may the light remain in your heart forevermore...
May it knock early

And may it stay very late
And may be leave all the gifts
Those you might call from fate,

Those, gifts of Allah
Peace, love, joy and good health,
May they be left behind

A Moon-faced Beloved

Jalaluddin Rumi

Ramadan, for observant Muslims, is a time of fasting, prayer and charitable giving. Here is a beautiful poem about Ramadhan, by Rumi, a 13th-century Persian poet and mystic:

O moon-faced Beloved,
the month of Ramadan has arrived
Cover the table
and open the path of praise.
O fickle busybody,
it’s time to change your ways.
Can you see the one who’s selling the halvah
how long will it be the halvah you desire?
Just a glimpse of the halvah-maker
has made you so sweet even honey says,
“I’ll put myself beneath your feet, like soil;
I’ll worship at your shrine.”
Your chick frets within the egg
with all your eating and choking.
Break out of your shell that your wings may grow.
Let yourself fly.
The lips of the Master are parched
from calling the Beloved.
The sound of your call resounds
through the horn of your empty belly.
Let nothing be inside of you.
Be empty: give your lips to the lips of the reed.
When like a reed you fill with His breath,
then you’ll taste sweetness.
Sweetness is hidden in the Breath
that fills the reed.
– Rumi
